Carpeted in a kaleidoscope of wildflower colour, summer in Sun Peaks really is a thing of beauty. Grassy undulations are smattered with everything from fiery Red Columbines and bright yellow Balsamroots to the striking pink of the Canadian Thistle and the sky-blue hues of Mountain Asters – and that’s just to name a few. This alpine stopover is as pretty as a picture.
Then there’s the fauna. The mountain-side resort may just be a stop-gap when making your way from Jasper’s glacier-fed lakes to Vancouver’s skyscraper skyline, but a night here could get wild if you keep your eyes peeled for its four-legged residents. Western Canada’s elusive black bears roam the dense forests, cougars hide away in the trees, moose make a common appearance and pesky racoons are forever looking to make mischief. Look up and you’ll catch anything from bald eagles to Great Horned Owls swooping through the sky.
If you’ve got a bit of time a short hike, or better yet a ride on the Sunburst chairlift, will reward with sweeping mountain views. And if you don’t fancy the trek down to the bottom again, just hop back on the chairlift – it’s as simple as that. Oh, and don’t forget to pack a little picnic because lunch with a view is definitely on the menu in this resort.
But if your visit really is flying, Sun Peaks’ attractive, European-style resort will have well rested, stocked-up with provisions and on your merry road-tripping way again in no time.
This pretty alpine village is as much or as little as you want it to be. The pretty resort will welcome you with lush green arms and a an expanse of wilderness that you can either admire from the village streets as you hurry on through, or get up-close-and-personal with by staying the day.
Come summer hiking and biking take over from winter’s snow dominated activities. Over two dozen trails make mountain biking Sun Peaks speciality, whilst if you prefer a more leisurely activity the chairlift will sweep you of your feet – literally – with its breathtaking views. And if you’re looking to find your inner om, alpine yoga has become an increasingly popular activity here.
