Looming over Vancouver’s northern skyline, Grouse Mountain lures locals and visitors from the city with its adrenaline-pumping activities and scenic views. The self-proclaimed ‘Peak of Vancouver’ is a favourite year-round hangout, and once you’ve had a taste of the fun, you’ll never want to leave.
Though it’s well known for its winter snowsports, Grouse mountain offers just as many (if not more) activities during the summer months. Skyride gondolas whisk sightseers to the mountaintop, where scenic walking trails, lumberjack shows and wildlife-watching awaits. For thrill-seekers, there’s zip-lining, paragliding and aerial rope courses, while unique attractions such as the turbine tower and mountaintop cinema offer something a little bit different.
Of course, the main attraction is the scenery. From the summit, there are some gobsmackingly gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains, the city and the glittering sea beyond. Make sure you take the time to appreciate these vistas from one of the epic viewpoints and grab a snap for your Instagram. If you find your stomach rumbling after all that excitement, there are a handful of restaurants where you can re-energise with classic British Columbia grub (don’t miss the famous Grouse Mountain nachos) and watch the sun dip below the horizon. The perfect end to the perfect day.
Whether you’re someone who thrives on adventure or you prefer to take recreation at a more leisurely pace, a trip to Grouse Mountain offers the best of both worlds. Relax and enjoy the scenery or challenge yourself to some adrenaline-pumping activities. The choice is yours.
Kick-start your mountaintop adventure with an exciting journey on the Skyride. As you glide above the towering pine trees, you can’t help but feel awe-struck by the panoramic views of the city and sea, with majestic peaks unfolding before you. To amp-up this thrilling journey even more, you can ride on the rooftop of the cabin during the summer and feel the crisp alpine breeze on your face. Even more picturesque views can be enjoyed at the Eye of the Wind. This is the world’s only wind turbine that offers sweeping vistas from a glass-enclosed pod 58-metres above the mountain peak.
Adventure-seekers won’t want to miss the chance to zoom over the forests, mountains and canyons with an exhilarating zip line experience. Just make sure you take the time to appreciate the scenery surrounding you, because with speeds of up the 80km per hour, this journey will go by in a flash. There’s also helicopter tours that take you on a breathtaking journey over the beautiful mountains and coast, as well as tandem paragliding provides for those who want to test their courage. Of course, there’s also the chance to enjoy the flora and fauna with your feet firmly on the ground with multiple hiking treks and guided eco-walks. If you want to challenge yourself, why not tackle the iconic Goose Grind? This steep 2.9-kilometre mountain track is guaranteed to get your heart pumping.
For something less high-energy, try the wildlife refuge. Watch the famous grizzly bears Grinder and Coco play and roam in their habitat and be captivated by the resident birds of prey. And if that’s not enough, the 45-minute lumberjack show is bound to entertain with log rolling, tree climbing, axe throwing and more.
Grouse Mountain is located just 15 minutes outside of downtown Vancouver. Take the Skyride to the top, or tackle the hiking trails.
The mountain is accessible seven days a week, including holidays. The Skyride is open daily from 8:45am-10:00pm.
Though the weather in summer is usually pleasant, the mountain air can be chilly so make sure you wear plenty of layers. If you plan on tackling some of the mountain trails, hiking boots are a must.
