Things To Do In Mauritius

If you’re feeling the need to get active after one too many lazy days (if there is such a thing) then Mauritius has countless options for you. Simply hike, cycle or climb your way around the island: Le Morne is the most breathtaking of all the hikes, and not just because it’s the hardest.

For pictures that are feed ready (seriously, no filters are necessary for this one) head to the rainbow coloured soils of Chamarel. Comprised of seven distinct colours, this unique natural wonder is certainly a sight to behold.

Equally Instagram worthy is Black River Gorges National Park. This mystical forest is all about the dramatic waterfall that falls from the gorge. Located in the central highlands, this national park is much cooler than the rest of the island – a bit of relief for those that can’t hack the heat.

Beach in Mauritius

If Mauritian rupees are burning a hole in your pocket, the Grand Baie Bazaar is is always on hand to help. From semi-precious stones to handmade textiles, it’s a shopper’s paradise. But haggling is key here, so get your game face on and make sure to be persistent. You will wear them down. Eventually.

Whilst other tourists sunbathe, oblivious to Mauritius’ multifarious nature, take advantage of their ignorance and explore the island at your leisure – you’ll have the throng of sun-worshippers chained to their resort’s loungers to thank when you find that the island’s sites are quieter than expected.

More than just a beach destination, Mauritius is packed with things to see and do so make sure you add this tropical paradise to your Southern Africa itinerary.
